He loves his brandy at night before he pulls back the covers and falls asleep. A reign is only as long as it is allowed to continue. Bracing for the worst, the neon lights that keep him awake will start burning any second now. They so violently shine it makes him sweat just to open his eyes. It’s like a nuclear bomb going off followed by an eon of sweet relief.

Roadside. Stalled and seated plucking blades of grass, awaiting help never summoned. He watches distant headlights, tries to guess the speed of passing cars and trucks. The sun begins to set. Motionless he rests and tries to feel the earth rotate. Desperate lips beg for water. Colorful fogs wash billow out around him. Arms and legs go numb. High hopes. The feeling lasts.

From the ceiling water is dripping; I tilt my head back to watch the encroaching beads of water. They grow larger. My eyes are open. Rain falls from the sky; rolls down my forehead and into my eye. I am not going blind.
